In Texas, History Never Gets Old!
With over thirty years teaching Texas and American History at the high school and university levels, and as an author of over 14 published books and a dozen journal articles, I believe that history is indeed the stories! Let's keep telling them!
I love talking about Texas and the American Frontier stories. The people are fascinating, their experiences unique and transformative for our history. Large groups or small, please contact me for your next program!
I have had the great privilege to have over a dozen of my books published since 1999; a list is available on this website. And all of them are available on a variety of sites including Amazon and Barnes & Noble. Check them out!
1. OLD 300; GONE TO TEXAS
2. THE MURDER OF WILLIAM MARSH RICE; A GALVESTON STORM NOVEL
3. UNTIL I COME HOME; LOVE LETTERS FROM THE WAR, 1918-1919
This was my first published book, written for a 7th Grade Class that I was teaching at the time. It is now the first of a new five-book series I am working on in 2024, new title and all.
This was my dissertation for my 1997 PhD at The University of Houston, and my introduction into the remarkable world of academic publishing. A great experience!
Published in time for the Centennial of the Spindletop Oil Boom, this popular book is being considered for a second edition as we near the 125th anniversary of the birth of Texas Oil.
The first of two Texas Ranger biographies, this book is in its second edition and also available as an Audio Book. It was also the inspiration for the official Rangers Foundation portraiture hanging in the Waco Texas Rangers Museum.
Rogers and Brooks were contemporaries leading the Texas Rangers into the 20th Century and modern law enforcement. Brooks County is named after this Ranger captain.
This was a fascinating experience in writing for a formulaic system, gathering hundreds of photographs to tell the story of this Southeast Texas city and county.
My bestseller to date, this is the story of the first American settlers in Mexico and Stephen F. Austin's Colony, 1820-1825. It is a great tale of the American Frontier Spirit, filled with the adventures, tragedies, and resilience of these first American families to make their way westward.
What began as a simple research project into family letters became a wonderful story of the perils and promises of love and war Poignant and compelling, this book is available on Kindle as well as Amazon. It is a love story, and a true story, for the ages.
My first entry into adult historical fiction, this dramatic novel is based on the murder of the millionaire whose name now adorns Rice University, set against the infamous 1900 hurricane that destroyed a city, all through the eyes of a Pinkerton detective caught in the middle of it all. A great read and available on Kindle and as an Audio Book.
Contact me if you are interested in purchasing any of my books. There is also a link on this site for ordering books directly through Amazon.
THE ADVENTURES OF HENRY WOODS, LIFE IN EARLY TEXAS, is my current 2024 project, a five-book series of historical fiction for tweens (ages 10-15). These five novelettes are filled with adventure, drama, and early Texas history, through the eyes of Henry Woods and his fictional friends Antonio Gonzalez, Marisol Calderon, and the Tonkawa boy Crooked Path. The four teenage friends find themselves in the middle of actual historical events across Texas, from a battle on Velasco Beach in 1832, to the dangerous Nueces silver mines, to intrigue near the stone fort at Nacogdoches, and finally to Gonzales where the Texas Revolution would fire its first shots in 1835. These are a great family-friendly read that I hope will find themselves from the B&N shelves into homes and classrooms around Texas. Look for them NOW! [Painting on right by artist Morgan Weistling]
